From conversation to action: how to organise an impactful Sustainable Energy Day

Hosting a Sustainable Energy Day is your opportunity to shape the conversation around renewables and drive meaningful change in your community. Over the years, we have had the opportunity to learn from thousands of Sustainable Energy Days across Europe and beyond. We observed that conversations are most valuable when accompanied by concrete action, so we put together a guide to help you ensure that your event has an impact.

The call to register a Sustainable Energy Day is now closed, but you can take part in the events by exploring the interactive map to find out what is taking place in your area.

Identify your goals

Fixing upfront what you or your organisation wants to get out of your event will determine how you plan your lecture, workshop, focus group or info session. Defining specific outcomes, whether they be awareness raising, networking, collecting feedback or teaching something to your community members, will shape how you inform people about your event and give you a framework to evaluate its success afterwards.

Know your audience

Depending on your topic, different kinds of participants will be necessary to help take the vital step from discussion to action. If you want to implement a clean energy project in your community, getting local grassroots support will be key, whereas fine-tuning technical solutions may require targeting a more specialised audience from the energy sector.

Get the right people in the room

Once you have defined your target community, think about the best way to reach them where they are. The interactive map will give you visibility among the vast EUSEW community, but you can actively target your audience using the toolkit for SED organisers. Make use of image templates and ready-to-use social media posts so to spread the word on the channels your audiences are most active on.

Interaction: encourage collaboration

In the lead-up to your event, be strategic about how you will get your audience engaged. Icebreaking activities to introduce attendees to one another can help build a collaborative atmosphere. Online events can make use of tools such as Slido and breakout rooms to foster discussion. Putting the participants at the centre will give them a sense of ownership and lead to fruitful results.
