European Sustainable Energy Week 2024 – another edition, another step closer to a net-zero Europe

European Sustainable Energy Week 2024

The European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2024, which took place in Brussels between 11 and 13 June, was the fifth edition of the biggest annual conference on renewables and efficient energy use in Europe. Each year, EUSEW provides the perfect opportunity for policymakers, industry representatives, businesses, civil society organisations and citizens to get together and exchange knowledge on key energy topics, steadily reinforcing Europe’s position as a leader in the global energy transition.

The event featured 60+ policy sessions and 7 plenaries. More than 400 speakers from the energy sector reached an audience of more than 11 500 people onsite and online. The physical Energy Fair, which ran parallel to the event, included over 50 exhibitors.

The opening of the conference was followed by the much-awaited EUSEW Awards Ceremony, where the winners of each category were announced: the Innovation  award was given to PHOTORAMACentrales Villageoises won the award in the Local Energy Action category, and Rita Gomes took home the Woman in Energy award. Then it was time for a dynamic debate alongside EUSEW Ambassadors from different sectors, and a keynote speech addressing net-zero solutions. Throughout the conference, the role of cities and municipalities was highlighted as a key factor in the success of the green transition, as were the initiatives turning the spotlight on solutions to improve energy efficiency and increase the uptake of renewables.

Key sessions such as Net-zero energy solutions for competitive and low-carbon transport industriesWhere generations meet to power the futurePioneering solutions for renewable energy sourcesSolutions for energy efficiency and renewables by small and medium-sized enterprises: Yes we can!Joining forces to scale up energy renovationCitizen-led initiatives for renovation and Pioneering solutions for energy efficiency underscored the EU’s commitment to engaging resources both on policy and community level in the lead-up to its net-zero future.

Overall, EUSEW 2024 drove home the message that Europe is more than ready to pursue its clean energy transition, increase its competitiveness in the renewables industry, remove barriers to decarbonisation, and make clean energy affordable and accessible for all.

In the words of Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, ‘We will continue to count on this EUSEW community in the quest to build a greener, better and more competitive energy system.’
