Description
The purpose of this session, co-organised by Eurogas and CCS Europe, is to highlight the urgent need to accelerate and scale up the deployment of CCS technology and infrastructure to meet the EU’s net-zero emissions ambition and strengthen the EU leadership.
CCS contributes to curbing climate change by reducing the volume of CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere or withdrawing those already within it. When combined with bioenergy, (BE)CCS can even lead to negative emissions, which will be necessary to reach climate neutrality in 2050.
Europe’s ambition to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 cannot be realised without extensive deployment of carbon capture technologies. It allows to prevent emissions from energy-intensive industries from reaching the atmosphere, offsets residual emissions and delivers carbon-negative pathways.
The session will focus on the opportunities and challenges for Europe to meet net-zero emissions by 2050 and become a leader in CCS technologies. It will also discuss the implications for European workers transitioning from one technology to another and highlight how CCS scale-up will create new jobs in the EU.
The session will achieve a better understanding of all the options CCS offers to decarbonise the European economy and the many benefits that this course of action can bring to European citizens. The session is relevant for all European citizens, and the key audiences are industry, policymakers, media, civil society including trade unions and the general public.
